The Waihi Volunteer Fire Service had less to do last week than has been the norm.
Last Wednesday they attended a head on collision accident on Galbraith Street. Senior Fire Officer Moe Stevens said "nobody was seriously hurt. The occupants of the cars were checked out by the ambulance service and allowed to leave".
They were called out to Bulltown on Thursday after smoke was reported. It turned out to be a controlled scrub burn off, so there was no problem there. Moe Stevens said that the fire service appreciates a call from anyone who is going to be doing a burn off. By law the fire service is required to attend if called, but there is no charge for the property owner. It is a much safer option to have the fire service in attendance.
On Sunday night they received a call about something happening at the back of the squash club which turned out to be a false alarm.
Moe Stevens said even though there was nothing when they followed up on the call, they still prefer to turn out. "It's easier for us to go and come home empty handed than to not go and have somebody lose something, that's for sure".
