The Coromandel has come top of the polls in a recent survey that asked Kiwis to rate their favourite New Zealand holiday destination.
But only just. The Coromandel scored higher than the South Island by a smidgen and one of the reasons people are preferring to holiday around our neck of the woods is because of the cost of visiting traditional hot spot locations like Queenstown.
While more people would still prefer to holiday overseas, the economic downturn makes domestic travel a better option, and the lure of stunning beaches, fantastic bush walks and history steeped in gold at a reasonable price makes the Coromandel an appealing destination.
Waihi (being on the boundary of both regions) gets a double whammy as the Bay of Plenty was voted favourite holiday destination number three which puts it in a great position to take advantage of the holidaying visitors as they travel.
