News that Newmont Waihi Gold (NWG) want to expand mine operations beneath homes in Waihi has come as a shock for many who are naturally concerned about how the mines plans will effect themselves and properties.
"It is already very hard to sell real estate in Waihi, particularly in the eastern end of town, this announcement has just added to the perception that residential security in Waihi is compromised thanks to the mines operations" said Distressed Residents Action Team (DRAT)spokesperson Collette Spalding
"Many Waihi residents will remain hugely disadvantaged until NWG agree to a bottom line of property purchase ( at a fair and equitable rate) for residents not willing to continue to reside in the areas effected by the industry, the perception that one day they might tunnel beneath your home is not a strong selling point. Some are already experiencing interrupted nights, homes shaking and inversion layers causing increased noise effects, the thought of these impacts being prolonged is very disheartening".
DRAT are encouraging concerned residents to start writing their submissions against the proposal now so they are prepared to make submissions in Feb when the mine makes official application just in case no adequate protection/compensation has been secured for residents.
DRAT will also host a series of public meetings to provide support and assistance for those concerned about how Newmont Waihi Golds latest proposal will effect our future.
