Sergeant Dave Litton said it has been a "horrible week" for the Waihi Police after the tragic death of a toddler on Tuesday. He said it's a good time for the community to rally around the well known family and offer support.
He also reported that a disturbing offence took place on Monday evening when a man went to investigate a noise coming from his garage. The 22 year old man found two strange men in the garage of his Seddon Avenue address and when he confronted them he was viciously attacked with a hammer by one of the men. Then, when a woman in the house went to see what was happening she was also assaulted with a hammer by the second man. Police were called and quickly apprehended one of the men with the help of a police dog. He was arrested and is now being held in custody in Hamilton. The second man is still at large but Sergeant Dave Litton said "we are hot on his trail and he will be arrested over the coming days".
Burglaries are occuring once again at Waihi Beach and Sergeant Litton said" it's time to be extra vigilant. We want to hear about anyone or anything that is out of place, so if you happen to see someone at a house that you've never seen before, give us a ring. We're happy to check these things out. There's no point ringing us 20 minutes later or later that afternoon, you need to ring us at the time".
It's thought the intruders are wearing gloves and may be using the beach to access and leave properties. They may also be using bikes, so if you see anybody riding along the beach who is carrying something, or it doesn't look right contact the police on 863 8179.
A few skate boarders have had their boards removed and Police are reminding parents to ensure their kids are wearing safety helmets when on their bikes as non compliance with helmet safety laws is a recurring problem, especially during the school holidays. Adults are also being asked to wear adequate safety helmets when cycling or they run the risk of receiving a $55 fine.
