Hauraki District Mayor John Tregidga says the Council is busy listening to concerns being raised by residents worried about Newmont Waihi Gold's planned mining expansions under houses in Waihi.
He said "there's not a remote chance that consent would be granted if there is even the slightest chance that property will be damaged due to the underground mining". He says Council is trying to get the information out there but until they receive an application and Newmont has outlined their policy to address mitigation it's difficult for them to move forward.
He went on to say that he supported early consultation and that Council has already received an application from Newmont regarding the Martha open pit extension, which is a non notified application because it falls within their mining license.
John Tregidga said he "understands and really acknowledges people's concern at this stage".
...and he picks the All Blacks to win by at least 20 points!
