"She's pretty much history" is the way Senior Fire Officer Moe Stevens described the Karangahake Hall after a fire overnight. The Fire Service siren called the firemen to action at six past five this morning. After it went off again a short time later the other appliances joined the water tanker at the site, along with Paeroa's water tanker and appliances.
Situated between Paeroa and Waikino in the Karangahake Gorge the hall was ablaze by the time emergency services arrived. The Karangahake Hall was built by the local community in 1957.
It's unclear how the fire started and Police and Fire Service investigations are continuing.
The Waihi Fire Service also attended a call out at the Waihi College Gym last night, but there was nothing there.

Helen Wilson of Waikino supplied the photos of the Karangahake Hall after the fire.
