Residents of Waikino witnessed what they described as the "massacre" of two Muscovvy ducks on Sunday afternoon. The incident happened by the bridge which goes from the Waikino Railway Station to the Victoria Battery site when a man and woman in their late forties to fifties used a gun dog to attack a male and female duck. The dog brought the ducks back to the male who bashed them to death while the woman raided the duck's nest for their eggs.
When the couple were approached they denied taking the eggs and said their dog had caught one of the ducks so that was why the man killed it.
They quickly left the scene with the ducks and eggs in a back pack. The man was also carrying a fishing rod.
The man was described as being about six feet tall and having little or very short hair with a defined moustache and the woman had blonde shoulder length curly hair. Both of them had an accent and their dog was a dark brown gun dog with white spots.
The ducks were introduced to the site by other Waikino locals and fed regularly. One of the witnesses to the attack said it was very upsetting for him and his partner to see because the ducks were domesticated and visitors and locals got a lot of enjoyment from them. He said he wished he'd been able to take a photograph of the couple or get their car registration. He phoned the Waihi SPCA who said what the couple did by using their dog to attack the ducks was not lawful and they could be charged with offences if they're apprehended.
