Local Man Dies After Being Hit By Car

A tragic accident happened last night when an Athenree woman driving a Hyundai car hit a local man who was walking along the side of the road on State Highway 2, just south of Waihi.
The man died at the scene. Police have not released the man's name yet as they are making sure that the man's family and friends have been notified before making the details public.
The accident happened at about 7.40 pm in a 100km/h area near the Baxter Road intersection. Traffic was diverted along Old Tauranga Rd and the highway between Ford Road and Adams Street was closed until 11 pm.
It's unclear why the man was walking along the road and investigations by the Waikato Serious Crash Unit are continuing.
