Market Day & Trolley Derby - Goldfest 2011

Posted by Gold FM on 10/10/2011

There was live music downtown, bouncy castles and rides for the kids, a local entertainers stage and a high flying trampoline display, which nearly didn't happen, after Dylan Schmidt was unable to join his sister Rachel on the 'tramp' after he ...ouch, broke a toe, or two! Another trampolinist covered for Dylan and the display was a great way to highlight the sport.

There was a big yellow banana complete with gorillas. The three blind mice turned up complete with their tails (they obviously hadn't met up with the farmer's wife ... yet). There were two wheels, three wheels, four wheels and more. Fat wheels and skinny wheels, 70 year olds and 10 years and the weather behaved so that locals and visitors could enjoy the carnival atmosphere of the Go Waihi organised Market Day and Trolley Derby for Goldfest.

The emergency services challenged each other with the Police Bluelight team importing a flash trolley for the day. The Waihi Volunteer Fire Service got stuck in and got up to a few sneaky tactics along the way.

A little birdie told us there were a bit of late night secret squirrel practise runs. Our lips are sealed.

There were smiles and spills, lots of laughs and Gold FM supports this event along with the other sponsors, MacMahons, HWE Leightons Mining, Newmont Waihi Gold and Trust Waikato.

Brian Gentil, who organised and MC'd the event said it couldn't happen without the generousity of the Waihi Lions who voluntarily worked to man the running of the Trolley Derby. He said their efforts gave a lot of pleasure to a lot of people.

Goldfest 2011 is underway in Waihi, so get amongst it and enjoy some of the fun on offer. If you haven't got your programme yet they're available at the Hauraki District Council office, the Waihi Library and Gold FM, all on Seddon Street.

Here's a selection of some of the trolleys that took part in the trolley derby last Saturday. Thanks to Ian Laurie, photographer. See our gallery for more photos!
