Gold FM approached Newmont Waihi Gold for a comment about the protest that forced their workers to leave their job site yesterday.
Newmont Waihi Gold says that they are not necessarily going to be mining in the Kauaeranga Valley near Thames. A company spokesman said at this stage "this is exploration only - it will not inevitably lead to mining. The protest took place on a road next to private farmland, not on conservation land".
"The vast majority of our work in that area is on private forestry land. Given that we have had prospecting and exploration permits over the area for 5 years we are surprised that this group has chosen now to protest what has been long-standing work".
