It was a United Nations of colour and fashion last Saturday night at the Waihi Beach Community Centre for the annual Op Shop Ball fundraiser. This year the theme was 'International' and all funds raised will be going to support the Christchurch Earthquake Fund. Usually the money raised from the ball goes towards Waihi Beach community projects but Greg Whyte, organising committee member of the Op Shop Ball said "this was our chance to do a little bit for Christchurch. Their needs are so much greater than ours and we received great community support."
About 450 people attended the festivities after presenting their 'airline ' ticket and the Tim Armstrong Band had the dance floor packed throughout the night. The 45 tables were decorated to represent different countries and the hall was decked out in the theme.
An ecclectic mix of vibrant costumes were worn with a myriad of countries represented, and prizes were awarded for the best dressed male, best dressed female and for the best dressed group.
The Waihi Beach Op Shop Ball is very popular and this year tickets sold out in just two days.
What's the theme for next year? You'll have to wait and see, but whatever it is you'd better be quick to get your tickets when they go on sale.
