Racael Coll, organiser of this year's Matariki Waihi event described Tuesday evening's celebration at the Waihi Community Marae as "an amazing event"."Over 400 people were in attendance and as one of the audience said " the wairua (spirit) and aroha (love) of Matariki was seen last night".She also thanked all those who helped out, promoted and talked about Matariki and said "we are truly grateful to see such a combined effort in our community".
A combined schools hikoi or walk will be held on the 1st of July with the walk leaving from Gilmour Lake at 10 am and ending at the Pumphouse on Seddon St. Children from the schools will be performing and sharing some of their knowledge of Matariki. Anyone and everyone is welcome to take part.
