Paeroa Man Remanded In Custody After Assault With Hammer

The mother and son who were attacked by two hammer wielding intruders at their home in Waihi last Monday night were treated in hospital and discharged to recover at home.

44 year old Andrea Windleborn was trying to protect her 22 year old son Carl McGahan when she went to his aid after he had disturbed intruders at their Seddon Avenue address at around 10.45 pm. Her son was being assaulted with a hammer and when she intervened she was also attacked with a hammer.

The pair did not know the men. One of the intruders was apprehended quite quickly by the Police who used a tracker dog and has since appeared in the Hamilton District Court facing two charges of injuring with intent and one of aggravated burglary. He is 22 year old Eli Te Moananui from Paeroa and he was remanded in custody.
