A truck and trailer unit that was heading down State Highway 27 from South Auckland rolled overnight about 200 metres south of the State Highway 2 intersection by the Hauraki Golf Course. The male driver died as a result of the accident. Emergency services were at the scene for most of the night and the road was closed for some considerable time so that the truck could be cleared from the road. Detours were in place and Police were asking motorists to avoid the area.
Police are also asking the Waihi public to assist them to find the family of a 65 year old local man who passed away in Waikato Hospital on the 18th of August. His name is Brian Pacey and his last known address was at a camping ground in the Athenree Gorge. It's believed that he was a student at Waihi College around 1962. Waihi Police Senior Sergeant Rex Knight is appealing for anyone who knows Brian Pacey, or who knows if he has relatives, either in New Zealand, or overseas to come forward and notify the Police.
A local Waihi man was clocked doing 169 kms an hour through the Athenree Gorge and Rex Knight said "it's just not worth it, your margin of error at that speed is extremely dangerous, as you risk taking yourself out and taking others out too".
Burglars are still out and about and a house in Connell Street was broken into last Friday morning. Electronic goods were taken from the address.
A small amount of personal items were taken from a property in Barry Road when the lady occupant went out at 6 pm and found that an opportunistic thief had broken into her house through the bathroom window when she returned at 7.30 pm.
Holiday caravans are also being targeted by burglars. Two were broken into on Bowentown Boulevard and another two were entered on Seaforth Road at Waihi Beach.
If you can help with any of these Police enquiries please phone 07 863 8179. Don't forget in an emergency ring 111.
