Civil Defence are advising people to stay away from the water after a strong 7.8 earthquake hit the Kermadec Islands 1,000 kms North East of New Zealand this morning. The quake hit at about 7.30 am and was 48 kilometeres deep.
An earlier tsunami threat for New Zealand has been down graded to a marine threat from Northland to Hawkes Bay. Higher than usual waves and tidal surges are expected so the advice is to stay away from the beach.
