Newmont Waihi Gold are justifiably proud of their 'golden geologist girl', Vanessa Beach, who has been acknowledged for her exploration design work. Her canny investigation led to the the identification of 'a significant resource' for Newmont at Kalgoorlie which they called 'Hidden Secret'. Dubbed affectionately as the 'Super Pit', the Kalgoorlie mine is the biggest open cast gold mine in Australia and is managed by Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) and owned (50/50) by Newmont Australia and Barrick Gold Corporation.
KCGM produces up to 800,000 ounces of gold every year and its operation far outweighs any other mining centre in Australia. The Super Pit will eventually stretch 3.8 kilometres long, 1.5km wide and go down to a depth of more than 600m. What had once been the Golden Mile, was named the Fimiston Open Pit, which in turn has become commonly known as the Super Pit.
Wonder if we have a 'Hidden Secret' waiting to be uncovered here?
