Waihi Has Busy Labour Weekend

It was a busy Labour Weekend in Waihi this past weekend with a range of events happening thoughout the district.

The Waihi Athletic Rugby Club celebrated it's 50 + 1 Anniversary at their club rooms on Kenny Street and what a way to cap off the festivities with our All Black win in the Rugby World Cup.

The Waihi Playcentre held their annual Preloved Toy Sale on Saturday and all the funds raised will go towards a new ramp at the Playcentre.

Waihi artist Val Tubman can pat herself on the back for taking out the supreme award in the Art Waikino Art Exhibition ... as well as hosting her own exhibition at her home over Labour Weekend. Congratulations Val!

The New Zealand Herpetological Society Annual Meeting was held in Waihi this year at the Waihi Community Marae with visitors coming from throughout New Zealand to discuss New Zealand native lizards and learn from each other about how to look after and promote awareness about our country's precious herpetofauna. There were many positive remarks made about the Waihi Community Marae as a venue and there was also lots of feedback about what a great town Waihi is and how good it looks.

The 11th Annual Art Waikino Art Exhibition was a great success with 41 exhibits sold and convenor Helen Wilson said 2 or 3 paintings could have been sold many times over. The viewers choice exhibit winner was Greg James from Te Aroha with his mosaic called "Maikon".

The Waihi Association Football Club Labour Weekend Tournament was on again and Morgan Park looked great with the splashes of colour from the visiting teams. Waihi Old Boys won with Waihi's Rudi Sas scoring a hat trick.

And that's just some of the things that happened around Waihi over the long weekend.
