Waihi Police Senior Sergeant Rex Knight described the continuing spate of burglaries as ‘frustrating’ this morning on the Gold FM Breakfast Show.
He said there have been a lot of burglaries lately and the “thieves are targeting specific places for specific reasons“. He went on to say “they are pretty organised and in one property in Seddon Ave and one in Silverton Rd they’ve taken a lot of property“.
A shed in Bulltown Rd was broken into and specific stuff was targeted on about the 16th of November.
He said people must see things as in one case a whole house was cleared out when the homeowner was away between October and the 15th of November. He’s hoping that people will support the Police and keep their eyes open as the house furniture that was stolen would have taken some considerable time to uplift, and trailers, trucks and possibly several people may have been involved.
People must see things and he’s hoping the penny will drop when they realise that something is going on.
A sixteen year old boy has been arrested for the Silverton Rd break in. He is described as being out of control. He doesn’t care, was probably not alone and they may be being guided by older adults.
Yet again a number of caravans on three different sites have been broken into on Bowentown Boulevard around the 17th and 18th of November.
A builder’s container was broken into on Seaforth Rd as well.
Vehicles are also being targeted for anything that can be taken and Rex Knight said “it’s been a frustrating time. “It’s demoralising for the property owners as well when their personal space is invaded”.
Mr. Knight said “everyday there’s something happening”. A drink driver was caught recently, four people broke the liquor ban on Rosemont Rd on Friday night and had to be dealt with and a range of things are taking up Police time as they build up towards the summer period.
Senior Sergeant Knight recommends that people make their homes as habitable as possible so that it looks like people are coming and going all the time which will break the opportunity for thieves. He said it's a good idea to pop home for morning tea if you can, and talk to your neighbours too.
In an emergency ring 111 and if you see something that looks out of place call the Police on 863 8179.
