Last week we reported about two very serious incidents. One being a fire at a house in the early hours of Sunday morning, and the other was the assault on a man which saw him hospitalised with injuries on Saturday the 5th of November.
Senior Sergeant Rex Knight said the assault was part of an ongoing issue between two groups of people that had been happening for about three or four years. One group of people saw one man alone from the other group and seriously assaulted him by Gilmour Lake. The assault took place in front of others and motorists were having to avoid the assault when it spilled out onto the road. The man who was assaulted has been discharged from hospital now and a 39 year old Waihi male has been 'charged with a serious assault with intent to injure' and will appear in court. Rex Knight said the man risks going to prison and Police enquiries are ongoing and they will probably end up charging at least three people with offences. He also thanked the public for their support.
Occupants of a Mataura Road property had a rude awakening at 2.40 am the morning after on Sunday November the 6th when somebody deliberately tried to burn their house using a molotov cocktail. Luckily the astute house holders realised something was amiss and went to investigate. Rex Knight said this has "sinister overtones" and the Police are pursuing this enquiry. If you were in the vicinity of Mataura Rd in the early hours of November the 6th and saw anything that could help the Police please contact Detective Simon Everson through the Waihi Police Station on 863 8179.
