The Waihi Athletic Senior A Rugby team came away with a deserving 27- 6 win over Tairua on Saturday afternoon. Playing at home, Tairua are always a tough team to beat and this was Waihi’s first victory there for quite some time. In an often bruising encounter, Waihi played into a fairly stiff breeze in the first half. Waihi struggled with field position, but still came out at half time leading 7- 6, care of a Jethro Meares try, finishing of a good team movement, to Tairua’s 2 penalty goals.
Having the breeze at their backs in the second half, Waihi dominated all aspects of play, running in 4 more tries with Jethro Meares securing his hat trick. Matt Spiers & Jacob Seymour also dotted down. Another good team effort, pushing Waihi to a clear second in the championship table only 1 point behind the leaders, Thames.
An exciting few weeks lies ahead for the team & its band of dedicated supporters as the team push for a semi final spot.
This Saturday is a game at home against Waihou.
