Newmont Waihi Gold External Affairs Manager Sefton Darby said this morning it's strange that the northern part of Martha Mine can become the western part, after a report in the New Zealand Herald this morning said the company "wants to explore below the western part of the pit".

Their update this week explains briefly what the Martha Exploration Project is, and where the work will be located. It covers the key points that the variation allows and offers information about the process that relates to the variation application. Newmont Update 02/02/2012

Newmont has received consent to explore beneath the Martha Mine open pit under certain conditions. Their application for a variation to their existing license was considered  by the Hauraki District Council, Waikato Regional Council and the Minister of Energy and Resources under The Crown Minerals Act 1991 and The Mining Act 1971.The decision can be read here.

Anyone wishing to object to the application has until Monday the 27th of February to lodge their objection with the Environment Court. A submission form is available for people to use and can be picked up from the Hauraki District Council office in Seddon Street, the Waihi Library, Newmont's office on Morseby Avenue or at the Golden Link office on Seddon Street next to the Waihi Memorial Hall.
