Waihi identity Shirley Spurr passed away this morning after a long illness.
She'd been the secretary/treasurer of the Waihi Community Marae for a number of years and led the building of a new marae complex in the 1980s, the completion of the wharekai in 1990, the wharenui in 1999, and the manuhuri shelter in 2006. She also assisted government agencies through the provision of marae-based training opportunities and she was instrumental in helping to establish the Kohanga Reo at the Marae.
Mrs Spurr was Secretary of the Waihi branch of the National Party for 27 years and a Justice of the Peace and Marriage Celebrant for many years.
Shirley received the Queen's Service Medal at an investiture ceremony on 26 September 2008 and she also received a Hauraki District Council Citizen’s Award in 2006..
She was secretary of the Waihi Girl Guides Association for 15 years and was considered the unofficial Citizen’s Advice Bureau in Waihi.
Her son Guy who was also a well known and respected Waihi personality passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on the 28th of June 2008.
Shirley owned and operated 'Julie Anne's', a women's fashion shop in Waihi's Seddon Street for a number of years and is survived by her husband Dick and daughter Bronwyn.
Our condolences go to the extended Spurr family and friends. R.I.P Shirley Spurr.
You heart was as big as your smile. You'll be missed.
