A section of State Highway 25, between Burke Street and Dickson Street north of Thames has been cordoned off. A short detour is in place while contractors and roading engineers work to ascertain what needs to be done after a hole appeared in the main Coromandel highway yesterday.
The hole is thought to be remnants of a mineshaft hundreds of metres deep. It appears that the road was built over the shaft with only a thin layer of tar covering it.
