Waihi Beach has been closed due to containers and debris coming ashore.
There is a container in front of the Waihi surf club and others have come ashore further down the beach as well.
Sergeant Dave Litton from the Waihi Police talked to us this morning about the closure and asked for the public to stay away from the beach until further notice and stay out of the water as there is a real danger with containers and debris floating under the surface.
Bags of milk powder and white milk powder residue is also washing up along sections of the beach. Some of the containers were loaded with wood and swimming or surfing at the beach poses a danger because of this debris.
More containers are floating just off the coast so there is also a danger for boats.
The Waihi Beach Surf Lifesaving Club will be patrolling the beach today to keep people away.
Here's what Sergeant Litton had to say.
