Waihi’s senior rugby sides enjoyed a successful afternoon at Te Aroha on Saturday, when both sides came way with good wins over rival club Waihou. Seniors B’s got the day off to a good start giving Waihou a rugby lesson running out convincing winners 48-10 after leading 31-0 at halftime. Again they scored some great team tries showing why they are on top of the points table.
In the senior A clash, Waihi were determined to carry on from the form theyshowed in the game against Mercury Bay last week. This they did with a strong opening quarter, dominating the opening exchanges and gaining good field position. Reuben Meares kicked an early penalty goal, then moments later he produced a great cross kick for Charles Pipe to latch onto and score.
At 10-0 down Waihou against the run of play scored a converted try, but it was Meares again who finished the scoring in the first half with a further three penalty goals.
The second half was riddled with errors from both sides. Both sides squandered try scoring chances, until intercept King Brett Ranga scored racing fifty metres to push Waihi out to a comfortable 24-7 lead. With Waihi emptying their bench, Waihou gained some advantage finishing the stronger side scoring two late tries. The clock was against them and Waihi ran out deserving 24-19 victors.
Waihi has some good performers on the day but it was winger Jaydon Rye and flanker Kurt Eklund who picked up the player of the day awards. Next Saturday both teams travel to Thames who are always tough opponents.
