A road closure will be in place overnight tonight, August 7, and tomorrow night, August 8, from 8 pm to 4 am for Waikato Regional Council to test new floodgates at Paeroa prior to a public demonstration this weekend. Detours will be in place diverting State Highway 26 traffic via Paeroa Tahuna Road and Awaiti Road.
The floodgates, which fill the gap in the stop bank where State Highway 26 runs through, were installed in August last year and as yet have not been used during a flood event.
The gates slide along a rail across the road, near the Criterion Bridge, and when they meet they get lowered about 30-40 millimetres for a perfect seal.
State Highway 26 at the Criterion Bridge will also be closed to all traffic except for emergency services during the open day demonstation to the public this Sunday 11 August between 9 am and11 am. People are asked to attend the demonstration on foot if possible. There will be limited parking at Paeroa College (Te Aroha Road) and the side car park at Work and Income (Rotokohu Road).
