Time’s running out to have your say on the future of cash in New Zealand with submissions to the Reserve Bank closing this Saturday, August 31.
Is a cashless future imminent?
Has that future already arrived?
There are already examples of stores that won’t accept cash. And they are legally allowed to refuse cash, according to Assistant Governor of the Reserve Bank, Christian Hawkesby.
Currently there is no legal obligation for a retailer to accept cash. The Reserve Bank seems to be balking at the costs to make and distribute cash in our society and has a discussion paper asking for opinions.
