The Waihi Skate Bowl at Rocket Park is gone now but the memories remain.
The very first skate bowl in New Zealand came from an idea Waihi local and Lions member Des Spiers brought back from a trip to Hawaii in 1975.
While it may have not been enough of a challenge for the hardcore skateboarders that surfed the footpaths and anywhere else they could experience the freedom and thrill of skateboarding, the Waihi Skate Bowl provided huge enjoyment for local kids (and probably a few scrapes and bruises).
Good on you Des Spiers and the local Waihi Lions at the time who put the effort into creating New Zealand’s very first skate bowl.
Andrew Moore interviewed Des Spiers, leaving Waihi with this piece of their history.
We all have to start somewhere and thanks to Des and his team Waihi got the skateboard bowls across New Zealand rolling and gave kids from everywhere the opportunity to test their skills and boundaries and pick up speed from there.
See our first story (4 September) about the removal of the Waihi Skate Bowl for pics of the bowl being demolished, comments and memories.
