Power was cut to about 1200 customers in and around Waihi today due to equipment damage on Powerco’s electricity network.
Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh said customers lost power at 5.46am after two electricity cables feeding into the Waihi Substation tripped.
“We received reports of a loud noise and a bright flash. When our crews arrived they found the faulty device and started repairs to enable supply to be restored.
“We’re investigating why this occurred,” Mr Marsh said.
While the majority of affected customers’ power was restored during the morning, the remaining were reconnected by 2pm.
“We would like to thank the Waihi and surrounding communities for their patience while we replaced the damaged equipment and restored power. We’re sorry for any inconvenience the outages may have caused,” Mr Marsh said.
