An earthquake Geonet reported at 5.9 magnitude gave an early wake up to over 5,000 people at 5.34 am this morning.
The quake was centred 50km North West of Te Kaha at a depth of 115km.
Geonet says deep quakes like this mornings are often widely felt due to the rigid subducting Pacific plate along the East Coast easily transmitting seismic energy.
People along the East Coast nearest the quake reported being jolted out of bed followed by a good shake.Did the earth move for you?
Next question - have you got an emergency kit at the ready?
