Brian Gentil spoke with Ross Cooper, Deputy Chair of the Thames Valley RFU, about the Northern Region Sevens Tournament in Whangamata for both men and women over the weekend.

Played in very warm conditions there was plenty of hot action, with Bay of Plenty coming out the men’s winners.

The teams now head to Hautapu near Cambridge for another tournament this weekend.

The Black Ferns have some injuries heading into their next round of games, and Ross said it was good there was plenty of depth with players stepping up to fill those gaps.

Brian mentioned how Kiwi Wayne Pivac, the new Welsh Coach, added two New Zealanders to his squad and how this had caused a little friction with some Welsh supporters saying Welsh based players should have the opportunity.

Ross had a few words on this before the demise of the 94 year old Roller Mills Tournament for young rugby players, and whether it’s a good thing or not.
