Brian Gentil spoke to Piers Harrison, Specialist Adviser for New Zealand Food Safety in Wellington for the Ministry of Primary Industries, to ask about the Marine Biotoxin Warning issued by MPI on December the 19th for the area along the coast covering Pauanui to Mt Maunganui.

We shared the warning on our page and watched the reach for the post ticking along to well over 114,000 by the time this interview was aired on Gold FM today.

Several people commented and contacted us about their concerns that warnings that appear at a similar time each year are not necessarily genuine for a variety of reasons.

The area the warning covers is a huge one and will affect those who look forward to a ‘feed’ of their favourite kaimoana, especially when they’ve just completed another busy year and are looking forward to kicking back at their favourite beach for some summer r’n’r.

There’s nothing quite like collecting, preparing, devouring and sharing your own beloved shellfish dish at this time of year.
