Waihi Fire and Rescue Chief Fire Officer Moe Stevens reported on the jobs they attended over the last week starting with a serious car crash on Christmas Eve, Tuesday December 24, on Galbraith St, Waihi.
A car crashed into a tree trapping the local male driver who had to be cut free. He was airlifted out by helicopter to Waikato Hospital in a serious condition.
There were no callouts on Christmas Day, although Boxing Day, Thursday 26 December, they attended a shed fire with their pump engine and tanker at the camping ground in Wentworth Valley in Whangamata. By the time they arrived the fire was out so they returned to base.
The last callout was to a fire reported in Riverbank Terrace, probably called in by passing traffic from the State Highway Moe said. It turned out to be a controlled burn and no action was taken.
Moe said while different districts may have fire bans in place, at this stage the Hauraki District doesn’t. He had not been advised of any change and reminded listeners to be careful with the dry conditions, have a hose handy if you have a brazier or barbecue going to play it safe. and use your common sense.
