Waihi put on a great day for the locals, the visitors, the players and the media who turned up at Waihi Athletic Rugby Club to cheer on the Chiefs and the Blues this afternoon.

Damien McKenzie came on at half time for 20 minutes or so and was the big crowd puller afterwards, signing autographs and doing the photos. He was the only All Black to take the field for the Chiefs.

The sides were really good with the crowd, almost 4000, signing t-shirts, caps, programmes etc after the game.

Conditions were good for a running game that saw the Blues ahead 19 - 0 at half time. The Chiefs scored a couple of tries early in the second half and got to 19 - 14 before the Blues scored to go 26 - 14 up. The Chiefs came back with a try in the last few minutes to bring it back to 26 - 19, the final score.

Both teams used up most or all of their 35 players, so it was a good run for them 2 weeks out from meeting at Eden Park Friday 31 Jan at 7.35 pm. Then the Chiefs play the Crusaders at Hamilton Feb 8.
