Fire and Emergency NZ investigating false tsunami alarms

Fire and Emergency NZ is investigating what caused a number of fire station sirens from Tauranga to Waihī to activate yesterday evening.

“This should not have happened and I apologise to Bay of Plenty people who were affected,” Fire and Emergency chief executive Rhys Jones said.

Because Fire and Emergency NZ sirens are linked to a nationwide emergency alert system the false alarm is being taken very seriously.

The public is encouraged to remain confident with the life saving alert system of text message alarms and sirens.
