Brian Gentil caught up with Thames Valley RFU’s Rugby Development Officer Scott Day to go over last Friday’s pre-season hit out between the Chiefs and the Blues at the Waihi Rugby and Sports Club grounds in Kenny St.
The conditions were ideal for a fast, although hot, game of four quarters with plenty of liquid intake by both players and referees.
The crowd approaching 4000 was treated to some hard hits, lots of combinations and a 26 – 19 final score line in the Blues favour.
As Scott said it wasn’t all about the final result, but more on checking how things the teams have been practicing came together in the game situation.
And both sides looked to get all their 35 players on the field at some time during the game.
While no All Blacks featured - Damien McKenzie, who had most of last season off with an injury, took the field for 20 or so minutes which attracted a lot of attention, and he was busy afterwards signing autographs and smiling for photos with fans, as were a lot of the players from both teams.
Scott and Brian also mentioned what a great job Waihi Athletic Rugby and Sports Club did preparing the field and hosting the day.
They also talked about the Hamilton’s Sevens Tournament coming up this Anniversary weekend, with both the New Zealand men’s and women’s teams playing.
