Brian Gentil spoke with Waihi College Principal Alistair Cochrane to find out about the start of the new school year.

Estimates are about 700 pupils are likely to turn up for the 2020 school year.

Alistair said two teacher only days next week will prepare teachers for the first intake of students. He explained what will be happening and how parents are welcome to the powhiri on Friday.

Alistair also talked about how the school is staffed.

He has also been busy doing new enrolments. Parents are welcome to ring the school if they’re new to town and need to enrol their children before school starts.

Alistair recommended students wait until next week if they want to change subjects.

The uniform shop is open again today from 1 pm to 6 pm.

Yesterday a false alarm caused the uniform shop to be evacuated.The uniform shop will also be open between 1 and 6 pm next Wednesday, January 29.

The Waihi College Board has now banned cellphones at school. Parents should be receiving information explaining the process. Alistair explained more about the cellphone ban to Brian. He said it’s about students being able to focus better rather than on their phones.
