A water main break in Waihi caused a sleepless night for Hauraki District Council’s water services crew.
Reservoir levels hit a critical low as council staff spread the message to residents about the urgent need to conserve water immediately.
Initially residents were advised to take drinking water only and no showers or clothes washing until further notice.
While Waikino was not critical, council asked that community to restrict water use to a bare minimum.
The situation became so critical water pods and water bottles were dispatched to several points around Waihi so that residents had access to drinking water.
Schools and preschools closed for the day and food businesses were impacted by the loss of water at their premises.
At 10.47 this morning Hauraki District Council updated the progress with the good news that the water main had been fixed and the reservoir was slowly filling up.
