OceanaGold has confirmed that ten more jobs are to go from their Waihi operation.
The ten staff affected are from the exploration and geology departments, and have been informed.
This follows seventeen redundancies from the Baxter Road Mill recently, bringing the total job losses from the Waihi mining company to 27 at this stage.
The Baxter Road Mill redundancies are due to mining at Correnso scaling down. Narrow vein mining using small equipment is continuing but the ore being recovered is not enough to keep the mill turning.
The Baxter Road Mill is being put into ‘care and maintenance’ for the foreseeable future.
For the next year OceanaGold will not be producing very much gold meaning they will not be producing much income to cover staff and operational costs.
OceanaGold says they are doing everything they possibly can to find jobs for the affected staff.
At this stage it is not known how many jobs have or will be lost through companies contracting goods or services to OceanaGold.
