Mayor Toby is in a family bubble which includes four teenagers and old school board games with outdoor activities in the backyard today.
Council is carrying on with its core services, water and waste. There was confusion about why council was not allowing non council bags for disposing of refuse. Toby explained it’s because it is a user pays system and suggested people rinse their recyclables and store them away to recycle after this is all over.
At the moment glass is not being recycled due to the threat of spreading COVID-19.
Council staff are working remotely and apart from face to face meetings, site visits and building inspections, everything else is pretty much normal, Toby said.
Toby and Brian talked about the people working to keep everything essential for community health and safety operating and Toby reminded us these people are doing it tough too.
Council will be looking at any rates savings that can be passed on to ratepayers. “If you’re experiencing difficulty don’t sit and stew on it - just make a phone call straight away, whether it’s setting up weekly payments, deferring payments or opting in for a payments schedule - just ring. As soon as you ring the office they can help you through it and take that stress level out of it so you can get by,” Mayor Toby said.
Waikato Civil Defence is overarching local civil defence efforts who are working purely around welfare 24/7 and making sure the right people are there to assist. Anyone needing assistance can FREEPHONE 0800 800 405. If you are struggling and having trouble getting access to food or medical supplies, don’t hesitate to call the freephone.
Mayor Adams and Brian will talk again next Wednesday morning just after 9 am to go through an update.
