Brian Gentil spoke with Kit Wilson from OceanaGold, who was safe in his Kauri Point bubble, to find out where the mining company is at now that the country has moved to Alert Level 3.
Kit passed on the sad news that well known and highly regarded contractor Rob Dix passed away suddenly.
Kit wants people to be aware Rob was a very valued member of OceanaGold’s team, a surveyor who was the driving force of the reinvigoration of the Pit Rim Walkway.
Kit did not have funeral arrangement details but felt with these exceptional times people who knew Rob or his colleagues may wish to know this sad news.
Kit explained what will happen with work duties at OceanaGold and elaborated about the huge number of changes that have been made to ensure physical distancing guidelines are observed.
A huge amount of effort is going into making sure the level 3 restrictions work.
Brian asked whether mining plans were on target? Kit said a lot of the planning has been ongoing because it can happen by computer and provided a little more detail about what is currently occuring.
Brian asked whether there had been any further redundancies since earlier job losses were announced and whether COVID-19 has caused any further job losses. Staff numbers are the same as they were since Level 4 lockdown.
Wharekirauponga is still on hold due to the lack of rain and consent conditions restricting water use in the area for drilling.
Brian also asked about AEP payments and community meetings. COVID-19 could mean the format for meetings will change.AEP payments are not due until the end of June.
Gold FM had a question asking whether someone living in a property when blasting was occurring will still be entitled to payments if they subsequently move. Kit’s understanding is if anyone moves before payments are made and they have left their forwarding address and contact details they should be covered for the AEP payment. The best thing to do is call the 0800 92 44 44.
