Brian Gentil caught up with Terry Gibbons from Waikino to have a chat about his mother, Dorothy Margaret Gibbons, who turned 100 last Thursday, May 21.
Originally Terry and family had planned for a day out at Ngatea Water Gardens for his mum, a place she has visited often in her life. But with Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown it meant a change of plans.
Terry put the word out to locals and friends to turn up on her birthday to sing Happy Birthday. As the country headed into Alert Level 2 on the same day about 30 or so people were able to gather on her front lawn while she sat in the sunshine and soaked up their best wishes.
Terry said she had a wonderful day, and really enjoyed the birthday cake she ‘shared’ with her friends, baked by the German Bakery in Waihi.
Dorothy has seen a lot of changes over the last hundred years, and Terry shared one or two of them.
Brian asked if Dorothy had received the telegram from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and the answer was yes. She also received congratulatory messages from Governor General Dame Patsy Reddy and Prime Minister Jacinda Adern.
Terry shared a lighthearted story about his mother off radio too, about the time his mother was heading to her wedding to his Dad and the vehicle broke down on the clay roads near Kopu. The driver, their next door neighbour, pulled out a hip flask for her to have a ‘nerve calmer or two’, which apparently did the job. Dorothy arrived suitably late for the wedding.
From the Gold FM team we wish Dorothy all the very best and congratulate her on achieving this amazing milestone.
