Prime Minister Adern has announced a softening of social gathering limits. Her Cabinet met today and discussed the Alert Level 2 settings and the pathway forward to loosening restrictions further.
From 12 noon this Friday, 29 May the size of all gatherings can increase to 100.
Church services, funerals and weddings can all have 100 people present and community sports will be able to operate more easily.
Preregistration with the Ministry of Health for funerals and tangihanga will no longer be necessary.
Large scale events like concerts will still need to comply with the maximum number but the shift to 100 people maximum means many more gatherings will be able to occur from noon this Friday.
With no new COVID-19 cases reported for the past 3 days this change is good news for business and another step towards renormalizing everyday life.
Dance floors at bars will still be out of bounds and guidelines will still be in place.
The Government has agreed to look into the settings on June 8 and consider that a move to Alert Level 1 could be achieved by no later than the 22nd of June.
“We are still in a global pandemic. Cases continue to grow overseas and we do still have people coming home but for the most part many aspects of life can and should feel much more normal,” Prime Minister Adern said.
