Another week of good progress means the end is in sight for the State Highway 2 upgrade in Ngatea. All the car parking bays and most of the eastbound lane have now had asphalt laid, with just the area near the bridge to be done.
Both lanes open over Queens Birthday weekend
Work has now stopped for the Queens Birthday long weekend, with traffic reopened to two lanes until crews return to site next Tuesday 2 June.Next week the attention will be on laying the asphalt in westbound lanes, from the bridge to near Ngatea Primary School.
Bridge closure and detour, Friday 5 June 9am to 3pm.
In order to safely lay the asphalt on the bridge and the approaches on the western side of the river, the road will need to be closed next Friday, from 9am to 3pm.This is because this area is too narrow for the asphalt machinery to work and allow a lane of traffic to safely pass. While the bridge is closed, State Highway traffic will be detoured around Ngatea, but the road itself will be open to traffic in both directions as far as River Rd.The Stop/Go traffic management system has been working to manage the traffic flows this week, so the bridge closure on 5 June is the only detour expected before the job finishes.
End in sight
The bridge closure marks the last major piece of work in Ngatea, with the job set to wrap up during the week of 8 June. During this week Higgins will be completing the minor finishing works such as line marking and reinstating the pedestrian crossing.
