Hauraki District Mayor Toby Adams joined Brian Gentil for a catch up, starting with the drought conditions still being felt by a lot of farmers nationwide, including around the Hauraki district.

Brian asked Toby about the road closure to resurface the Piako River Bridge in Ngatea today. The road will be closed from 9 am to about 3 pm, with detours in place.
Brian asked if town was accessible, and yes, all businesses are open and would love to see locals and visitors.
Toby also gave an update on the State Highway 2 upgrade with NZTA. They don’t have much more to do before winter sets in and will be back early summer to finish what has been a big job.

Brian and Toby discussed the confusion about what is being collected in recycling at present, after the public was told to hold on to recycling and it would be collected after we came out of lockdown. This hasn’t happened with a lot of people getting caught with plastics 3 to 7 that they now have to sort through, after understanding this would be taken during the changeover period.

Toby gave an update on the Waihi Transfer Station which has had some major work done during lockdown and is now up and running again.

And Brian also asked for an update on an issue that just won’t go away, Waihi’s water shortage. Toby explained they still want to hear from people if they come across any water leaks as this has been a major concern, and that a dam would not be a consideration as Waikato Regional Council was not likely to sign off on something like that, and the cost was very high too.

Brian stressed there needs to be a solution with the increasing numbers using the water with Waikino added to the same supply and also new subdivisions.

And Brian asked Toby how it felt heading back into the Chambers for meetings after spending the last couple of months having meetings separated and on screens.
