A front is expected to move slowly south over Northland this afternoon and evening and then affect the Coromandel Peninsula overnight and Thursday morning.
There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms associated with this front, some of these may be severe bringing localised downpours of 25 to 40mm per hour.
Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips.
People should prepare for flooding, slips, power outages and road closures.
It’s a good idea to tie down or secure your outdoor furniture, clear your drains and gutters and check street drains near properties are clear.
Driving conditions may be hazardous. If you need to travel, drive to the conditions and be prepared for slips and debris on the roads.
