Underground cable issue causes power outage in Waihi

Media Release

Gold FM communicated with PowerCo yesterday to ask what caused the power disruption to Waihi yesterday and where the fault was located.

The CBD and further afield was without power until the fault was located and repaired. Thanks PowerCo.

Power was cut to 792 customers in Waihi just after midday yesterday afternoon.

Field crews located the source of the outage at Rosemont Road.

The outage was caused by an underground cable fault. Powerco is still investigating why the cable failed.

Supply was restored to all customers by 1:30pm that afternoon.

Powerco is New Zealand’s second largest electricity utility and gas distribution utility with around 1.1m customers (across 446,000 connections) connected to its networks. Powerco’s electricity networks are in Western Bay of Plenty, Thames, Coromandel, Eastern and Southern Waikato, Taranaki, Whanganui, Rangitikei, Manawatu and the Wairarapa.
