Brian Gentil and Waihi Association Football Club’s Brent Willoughby had big smiles when they talked about the Waihi side winning 4 - 1 against Claudelands Rovers Squatters at Waihi College last Saturday. It was a great game with Waihi taking their chances and some good team play making the difference. Brent said the visitors seemed to have the upper hand for a fair bit of the game, but Waihi got the shots they took into the back of the net to take a good win after a draw last week.
Brent mentioned the juniors and school football will swing into action this week with school back for the third term.
Brian and Brent talked about Chris Wood, the All Whites striker, who scored from a spectacular overhead kick deep into first half stoppage time to help Burnley to a 2-0 win at Premier League cellar dwellers Norwich.
It’s Wood’s 13th league goal of the season, the most by a Burnley player in the Premier League.
The English Premier League games over the weekend were next, with a look at the results during a busy period leading up to the end of the season with games coming thick and fast at the moment. Brent’s side Tottenham had a good win so he was pretty happy.
The Phoenix kicked off the second part of the A-League Football Competition in Australia, coming up against top side Sydney FC. They had a great game and held their own, with a couple of ref calls going against them making the difference, going down 3 - 1. With no Video Assistant Referee there was an offside that saw a Phoenix goal disallowed, and also a handball by a Sydney FC player that the referee missed that would have seen the New Zealand side awarded another penalty.
