On the Gold FM Football Report with Carters Contractors on Monday morning Brian Gentil spoke with Brent Willoughby from Waihi Association Football Club, starting with a quick look at the FA Cup Final which was played in the early hours on Sunday morning New Zealand time. Both Brian and Brent picked a win for Chelsea, who scored first. But it was Arsenal who came out on top, winning their fourteenth title, 2 - 1.
Brent covered the junior and school games over last weekend with some wins and a couple of losses, and mentioned they had another good turnout on Sunday with Richard James ‘midgets training’ - as Brent calls them - with about 57 turning up at Morgan Park.
Waihi wasn’t quite good enough to beat top team Melville Mighty B’s, going down 3 - 0. Their fill in keeper had a great game, saving several shots that could have seen the scoreline stretch out further.
Brian and Brent then checked out the Wellington Phoenix game against Western Sydney, losing 1 - 0 in a game they could have won. They’re now in 3rd position with a game against Brisbane Roar on Wednesday night.
The FA Cup Final got another going over by Brent and Brian, and they ended the report with a look at the All Whites and a number of home games to look forward to in the coming season. This is thanks to Oceana Football Confederation looking at a revamped plan for the region’s 2022 World Cup qualifiers to governing body Fifa. The format could give the All Whites up to five home games in 2021, if the team reaches the final and New Zealand hosts one of the group stages.
