On the Gold FM Fire Call Out on Monday morning Brian Gentil spoke with Chief Fire Officer Moe Stevens from Waihi Fire & Rescue about the four calls they attended over the last week.
The first was last Thursday, August 27, when the siren went off at midday. This was to assist St John with a medical situation.
The same day at 5.30 pm they were called to Clarke St in Waihi to the skate bowl, where a young boy had fallen off his bike and had difficulties in getting out in the wet conditions. Luckily there were no broken bones Moe said.
On Saturday, August 29, Waihi Fire & Rescue were called to assist Whangamata Fire & Rescue when a fence that backed on to the local RSA caught on fire. It’s understood the Whangamata fire engine wouldn’t start. The Waihi firefighters got half way there before being turned back, and believe the Whangamata engine finally kicked into life.
And on Sunday, August 30, the siren sounded to get assistance at an accident scene on Landlyst Rd in Golden Valley on the outskirts of Waihi, where a motorcyclist had crashed. They prepared a landing site for the rescue helicopter, but sadly it’s understood the patient passed away.
